The Dukedom of Edinburgh is a title created four times for members of the British Royal Family since 1726. The dukedom is currently held by H.R.H. The Prince Philip, consort of Elizabeth II.

First creation (1726)Edit

The title was first created for Frederick, Prince of Wales, grandson of King George I of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover. Frederick became Prince of Wales in 1727.

In 1764, George III made his brother Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, as it was custom of the House of Hanover to bestow dual titles, simbolizing the Union between the Kingdoms in 1707.

The third creation was for the second son of Queen Victoria, Alfred, who later married Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, and his heir committed suicide in 1899. The dukedom became extinct with his death.
